ABOUT 10,000 people a week go to The Rack, a bar in Boston favored by sports stars, including members of the New England Patriots. One by one, they hand over their driver's licenses to a doorman, who swipes them through a sleek black machine. If a license is valid and its holder is over 21, a red light blinks and the patron is waved through. But most of the customers are not aware that it also pulls up the name, address, birth date and other personal details from a data strip on the back of the license. Even height, eye color and sometimes Social Security number are registered. "You swipe the license, and all of a sudden someone's whole life as we know it pops up in front of you," said Paul Barclay, the bar's owner. "It's almost voyeuristic." Mr. Barclay bought the machine to keep out underage drinkers who use fake ID's. But he soon found that he could build a database of personal information, providing an intimate perspective on his clientele that can be useful in marketing. "It's not just an ID check," he said. "It's a tool." Now, for any given night or hour, he can break down his clientele by sex, age, ZIP code or other characteristics. If he wanted to, he could find out how many blond women named Karen over 5 feet 2 inches came in over a weekend, or how many of his customers have the middle initial M. More practically, he can build mailing lists based on all that data — and keep track of who comes back. Bar codes and other tracking mechanisms have become one of the most powerful forces in automating and analyzing product inventory and sales over the last three decades. Now, in a trend that alarms privacy advocates, the approach is being applied to people through the simple driver's license, carried by more than 90 percent of American adults. Already, about 40 states issue driver's licenses with bar codes or magnetic stripes that carry standardized data, and most of the others plan to issue them within the next few years. Scanners that can read the licenses are slowly proliferating across the country. So far the machines have been most popular with bars and convenience stores, which use them to thwart underage purchasers of alcohol and cigarettes. Upon receiving the news from Growin Cooperation, the project manager (Jeff Armstrong) who was drawing the project proposal on behalf of Multi Projects Inc. got too excited as he has been looking forward to embark on a challenging project as well as the Growin Cooperation Project.However, the Project Manager did not call a project kick-off meeting which its aim is to involve all stakeholders and map a better way forward to better handle the project within all agreed budgets and time frame. Jeff has been seen interrupting Jennifer without considering what Jennifer was doing to tell her he wanted to have Tyler in the Growin’s project. This was not good communication a nd also lack of respect for others. Jeff also implied that Tyler wanted to work on the Growin Project whereas in the actual fact it was not the case. This was misrepresentation of facts which was a result of poor communication skills.Jeff Armstrong failed to display interpersonal relationship with his work mates/peers. The way he approached Jennifer about engaging Tyler on the Growin project was like giving her instruction on what to do in her department whereas Jennifer being Tyler’s functional manger was the one to assign a system engineer to that project. The way he approached Julie on the same issue also is a cause for concern as he interrupted her in her meeting. It has also been observed that Jeff was an ambitious and arrogant individual who would do anything he could to get what he wanted.This is unhealthy for an organisation and can lead to the possibilities of loosing existing and prominent clients. If all other managers go with Jeff, chances are that they may lose b usiness from both Growin and Goodold projects. Goodold awarded Multi Projects Inc. the project because they were promised that Tyler will be working on the project and once he is moved to the Growin Project, Multi Projects Inc. would not have honoured their agreement and Goodold may feel betrayed hence terminate the agreement. Another identified challenge was over reliance on one resource person to implement projects.Over reliance on one resource person is very risky for a company and was a result of lack of delegation and transfer of skills. It is very crucial in an organisation to transfer skills between team members so that the organisation functions fully under any circumstances. The dangers associated with gate keeping (keeping all to oneself) are that if the person that is being relied upon resigns from the company or otherwise, the firm is going to face huge problems in executing projects at hand as well as those, that it intends to acquire as this is going to lead to lead to not satisfying the customer or the project sponsors.It is very imperative for a firm to adopt an in house development aimed at skill transfer so that it positions itself better for any circumstance that may arise. As we breath in, oxygen in the air containing oxygen is drawn into the lungs through a series of air pipes known as the airway and into the lungs. As air is drawn into the lungs and waste gas excreted, it passes through the airway, first through the mouth or nose and through the pharynx, larynx and windpipe – also known as the trachea. At this point it then enters the lungs through the bronchi before finally reaching the air sacs known as alveoli. This transference is known as diffusion and is linked to the cardio vascular system. (1998) The Singapore Youth Coronary Risk and Physical Activity Study. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. PURPOSE: To examine the youth at coronary risk in Singapore because of a lack of physical activity. ABSTRACT: A cross-sectional study of 12 schools, one primary and one secondary, revealed the coronary risk of youths in Singapore. These studies were taken from each of the six geographical regions of Singapore. Children enter Primary School at approximately age six, and secondary school at approximately age twelve. To get a more evenly distributed age and gender sample, four additional schools were also added. The ethnic groups of the entire group consisted of the following: 1293 Chinese (81.9%), 137 Malay (8.7%), 84 Indian (5.3%), and 64 other (4.1%). One of the first studies was to have 24 students wear monitors which recorded heart rate. They had to wear them for 24 hours three days a week and for 14 hours two other days of the week. The conclusion from this study was that school children were moderately accurate in documenting their individual activities. The recordings also showed that when children participated in self-disclosed activities, they had higher recorded heart rates . A questionnaire was developed from this study and was comprised into three sections. These sections were, the participants assessed their current level of physical activity using the following categorizations: 1) inactive, 2) relatively inactive, 3) light physical activity, 4) moderate physical activity, and 5) vigorous physical activity. The second section related to the participants level of physical activity over the previous 14 days. The third section asked the participants to document the number of specific annual athletic events. If the students answer to annual sports participation was not equal to the exact number of sport events stated, the students questionnaire was considered invalid. A total of 8.9% were discarded in relation to this. The survey was overall considered to be reliable. A week of school in Singapore consisted of five days and Saturday morning. On each Saturday morning, the schools doing this study would complete the Physical Activity and Exercise Question naire. The students underwent a physical assessment of blood pressure, height, and weight. They were assessed for body composition using a skinfold caliper, tape measure, and bone vernier. They then had a blood sample taken for analysis of their bloods chemistry. This occurred after the written completion of background information. Here are some of the results of these tests. As you may recall, height was recorded.Height was greater for each age group until boys reached the age of 15, and girls reached the age of 14. Weight also kept increasing until age 16 for boys and age 14. This demonstrates that the students had basically reached the end of their growth spurts. As for body fat readings, boys body fat percentage was higher from age 6 to 9, then stayed consistent up to about age 14, then had lower body fat readings after the age of 15. For girls, body fat was relatively the same for girls 6 to 12. Greater body fat was recorded between ages 12 and 15 and about the same body fat readings thereafter. Body fat corresponded with boys and girls to how much physical activity they participated in. As for the physical activity and exercise questionnaire, boys were generally more vigorously active than girls. Furthermore, boys were more physically active than were girls at each age group from age 10 to 17. However, gi rls documented that they were active in annual sports at age 13 more than boys were. However, afterwards, boys annual participation in competitive sports was higher than that of the girls. As for the blood tests, no discrete differences were noted between the genders nor between different age groups. REACTION:Although the article seemed difficult to follow at times, there was some very good information in it. There were a bountiful number of charts in the article which helped to understand the material that was not very well explained. After reading the title I thought that the youth in Singapore were under risk of coronary problems. After reading the article, you discovered that there were no students with an overly dangerous blood pressure level. I think it would be nice to do studies like this in the U.S. I know that there are many overweight teens and need to get on an exercise and diet plan. Teenagers usually dont have high blood pressure, granted there are teens in some cases that do. The tests done in Singapore were mainly to try and detect things that would later on in life be a health problem. There are probably kids in the U.S. that think that they are healthy but they are not. If tests could be done to prove that they werent, maybe they would change their unhealthy lifestyle.
